This new release affords the listener a brief but fascinating glimpse into the life of Ivor Gurney, his friends and fellow composers. Recognized for his musical abilities at a very early age, Gurney was both composer and poet, the first Englishman since Elizabethan times to be equally gifted in both arts, whose first collection of verse, Severn & Somme, was published in 1917. His inspiration was founded upon a passion for the natural beauty of the county of his birth, Gloucester, and a sense of being part of an historical continuum with its roots in Roman Gloucester. A naturally joyous spirit, he was endowed with a sparkling sense of humor and took delight in many friendships. Roderick Wilson is an exceptionally versatile artist whose intelligent musicality is admired in performances from Monteverdi to Maxwell Davies. His burnished and flexible baritone is equally in demand for recitals as well as opera and oratorio. He has a wide experience in recital work, and current appearances include the Wigmore Hall, as well as the Aldeburgh and Cheltenham Festivals.
