Carl Dolmetsch, in his long life (he died in 1997) was one of the leading exponents of the recorder, a virtuoso on his chosen instrument to compare with Segovia, Lionel Tertis, Leon Goossens and Dennis Brain in their hitherto less-than-fashionable fields. His joy in music-making and the warmth and informality of his concerts and recitals endeared him to his audiences. Through his wife and equally famous children his lasting influence has been immense. This CD, with Joseph Saxby playing the harpsichord and Dolmetsch himself on treble, descant and sopranino recorders comprises uncommon and rare recordings of German, French and English music, made in 1950 and 1953, and demonstrates the breadth and depth of his career.
