Il giovedi grasso (Fat Thursday) is one of several of Donizetti's short comic operas that have been dusted off in recent years with considerable success. The opera is a delightfully madcap farce much in the spirit of the young Rossini. Its exact date is unknown, but it was probably premiered at the Teatro del Fondo in Naples, late in 1828 or early 1829, in the composer's thirty-first year. Live performance, Lugano, Switzerland, February 1961.
