Notes & Reviews:

In both the literary work and political activism for which she was celebrated, Judith Wright (1915-2000) was profoundly concerned with love. This took a number of forms: the erotic love between two adults, the love of a parent for a child, or the love of a child for the family; love for the landscapes of northern New South Wales ("the country that built my heart") and for the global physical environment; a deep sympathy for the indigenous people who were "dispersed" - or worse - to make way for her own settler families. Wright has been described as being "part of that brilliant generation of Australian poets who published their first slim volumes in the 1940s, with the thunder of war in the background and the clash of theory loud in the air." Wright became an increasingly vocal advocate for various conservation battles, such as land-clearing and destruction of the Great Barrier Reef, and was a passionate advocate for formal reconciliation between whites and Aborigines, marching, not long before her death, in a rally to support that cause. Her poetry has been attractive to composers for some time. Her concerns remain those which require restatement, and her control of diction and imagery makes her work a joy to set to music. This collection demonstrates how five composers have responded to Wright's work, and it is fascinating to compare three very different settings of its title track, Woman's Song.
