Notes & Reviews:

The famous navigator Christopher Columbus was also a clear-sighted witness of the changes of the fifteenth century. It was the end of 'Al-Andalus,' the Muslim kingdom, the time of the exodus of the Jews and the discovery of a new world. As always, these changes found their transcription in the contemporary musical production. Tracing the original repertoire, Jordi Savall offers a unique journey through the Christian, Jewish and Muslim musical traditions in relationship with texts by or about Columbus and his time.

"The sonic journey takes in the exotic sounds of Al-Andalus with Sephardic laments and improvisations inspired by Arab and Jewish oral traditions; elegant songs and dances from the Spanish court, and the haunting sounds of Amerindian cultures. The plangent voice of Montserrat Figueras sets the scene while Begoña Olavide, Lluis Vilamajó and Furio Zanassi also offer some evocative singing. There's some outstanding playing, too..." -BBC Music Magazine ****
