A pupil of Stanford at the Royal College of Music in London, John Ireland later taught composition at the college while earning his living for many years as an organist and choirmaster. His music belongs to the twentieth century English musical tradition, demonstrating some lyrical affinity with Elgar while admitting contemporary infl uences from abroad into a very personal idiom. These are among Ireland's best orchestral works, given authoritative performances by one of Britain's greatest conductors. With the re-release of some of his earlier recordings, Sir Adrian Boult (1889-1983) is regaining his unjustly-neglected reputation as one of the greatest conductors of the twentieth century.
