Notes & Reviews:

Walther Ludwig was born the son of a businessman in Bad Oeynhausen and was initially studying medicine when, just for fun, sang for a friend who just happened to be the conductor of the local opera house. Things suddenly became serious when it was determined that Ludwig possessed such a fine tenor voice that he was convinced to give up medicine for the opera house. A successful lieder recital during the 1929/30 season under the conductor's tutorship paved the way for a contract to perform at the opera house. With the Depression underway, he accepted the contract which eventually led to a very busy career at the house in Schwerin. Roles in La Dame Blanche, La Boheme, La Traviata and Madame Butterfly brought forth praise from the critics for his soft, flexible and extremely melodious voice. Such success led to a contract with the State Opera in Charlottenburg, Berlin. Here he won acclaim as Tamino, Don Ottavio, Belmonte and Idamante, the roles which brought him international fame as a Mozart singer par excellence. He also devoted himself to lieder and oratorio singing, and even made several operetta recordings. Physical problems forced him to retire in the 1950s but he would continue to pass along to many students the musical knowledge he had gained. And, yes, during the 1960s he took time to go to school and finally complete the medical studies he had set aside so many years earlier!
