Notes & Reviews:

Born in Richmond, Kentucy, Robert Oppelt was encouraged by his musician parents to study the double-bass at age 15 and advanced very quickly. After only two years of playing he became Principal Bass with the Stamford (CT) Symphony Orchestra. After attending the North Carolina School of the Arts, he served as Principal Bass of the Greensboro (NC) Symphony. In 1982 he auditioned for the National Symphony Orchestra and was invited to join the bass section by Mstislav Rostropovich. Two years later he became Assistant Principal Bass and then became Principal in 1996. During his professional career he has performed with such musicians as Yo-Yo Ma, Hillary Hahn and Joseph Kalichstein. This disc, a wonderful demonstration not only of his talents but also of nine of his fellow National Symphony musicians, features some familiar classics but mostly includes some highly unusual original material. This CD is also dedicated to making the public aware of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's Disease), and portions of the proceeds go to ALS research.
