Notes & Reviews:

Alexander Welitsch was born in Macedonia as Alexander Asgaruh. He began his studies in his hometown, later moving to Hanover for further training. In 1936 he became a member of the Stuttgart State Opera, where he remained until 1941. After touring and the War, he came back to Stuttgart where he remained until 1957. Using Stuttgart as a base, he would make guest appearances at Palermo, Rome, Naples, Barcelona, and Munich. In 1954 he was heard at the Maggio Musicale in Florence as Lysiart in Euryanthe. In 1955 he made an appearance at the San Francisco Opera and the following year at the Chicago Opera. Among his most brilliant roles were Scarpia in Tosca, Golo in Pelleas et Melisande, Escamillo in Carmen and Danton in Dantons Tod by Gottfried von Einem. He also enjoyed a fine reputation as a concert and oratorio singer. He was married to Inge Borkh and they settled in Switzerland after his retirement. Remarkably, there is only one true commercial recording of his voice: the great scene with Philip II and the Grand Inquisitor from Don Carlo, as recorded by Telefunken and reproduced here. The rest are radio broadcasts, presenting some unusual material (Marschner, Schillings, d'Albert) along with the "standards."
