Notes & Reviews:
Listed as thirteenth among Verdi's stage works, Il corsaro was actually conceived years before it was finished. By the time it was finally produced in 1848, its style seemed something of a throwback, and the premiere was an unmitigated disaster. Many subsequent writers dismissed it as one of Verdi's worst operas, but this opinion has been challenged in recent years. Its numerous musical beauties outweigh any hesitations induced by its old-fashioned story, and this 1971 live performance shows it at its best.
