Ponchielli: I Mori di Valenza / Frontalini, Margarit, et al

Notes & Reviews:

As both an artist and a man, Ponchielli was a troubled individual and a good deal less sunny and cheerful than his music would lead one to believe. In 1878 he concentrated his energies on I Mori di Valenza but negative comments on the libretto by critic Leone Fortis made him drop the work almost right away. Audiences saw Il figliuol prodigo in 1880 and Marion Delorme in 1885 before Ponchielli died of pneumonia and so leaving uncompleted I Mori, which he had started and abandoned eight years earlier.
