Album Summary
Gillis, Don : Symphony "X" ("The Big D")
Gillis, Don : Tulsa
Gillis, Don : Symphony no 3 "A Symphony of Free Men"Notes & Reviews:
Gillis was a populist American composer who wrote music that, in his own words, "kids could whistle in Waxahachie or Dubuque." Conductor Ian Hobson has been surveying Gillis' orchestral output to great critical acclaim. Just out is the world-premiere of Symphony 3, bundled with Symphony 10: The Big D and Tulsa. David Hurwitz writes that Symphony 10 is "a delicious, largely humorous work very much in the spirit of the sort-of-famous Symphony No. 5 1/2." He goes on to call Tulsa a "Midwestern 1812 Overture" that trades in Tchaikovsky's famous cannons for a fusillade of six-shooters.
