Having already established herself as a gifted interpreter of classical, pop, and Celtic songs, the New Zealand-born singer Haley Westenra expanded her musical horizons with this 2008 collection. Haley Sings Japanese Songs features Westenra interpreting 12 classic Japanese tunes, some translated into English but most performed in their original tongue. The album also includes a duet between Westenra and the late pop star Minako Honda on the popular hymn "Amazing Grace," sung in both English and Japanese. The album was a major commercial success in Japan. ~ Mark Deming
