A stately and contemplative exploration of Hammerschmidt's motets
Hammerschmid, a Boheman-born German composer from the generation following that of Schutz, was a prolific composer of sacred music, especially of motets. His motets ranged widely in their levels of difficulty and in the extent to which they adhered to traditional models. The singers available to an organist and composer employed at a relatively modest church in Germany – in Hammerschmidt’s case, he worked in Zittau for the greater part of his career – were not always of the highest quality, with amateurs filling in the ranks as needed. Hammerschmidt himself wrote of the necessity of composing music to fit the capabilities of available performers, and saw his more traditional polyphonic motets as fitting the needs of churches whose vocalists were not up to the demands of virtuosic sacred concertos in an up-to-date style. The pieces chosen for this recording feature works mainly written in this more conservative style, and are complemented by instrumental suites. Heinz Hennig and his forces explore these pieces at a generally stately, contemplative pace. The Knabenchor Hannover is polished and sweet-sounding. While the latter may be a characteristic shared by many a boy choir, the former quality most certainly is not; listeners wary of off-key child choirs need not fear this one. The sound and performance are both crisp and well defined.
