Notes & Reviews:

This disc marks the beginning of a new survey of British Clarinet Concertos, featuring the exclusive Chandos artist, Michael Collins, who here combines the role of clarinet soloist and conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. This disc features works for clarinet and orchestra by Gerald Finzi, Sir Malcolm Arnold and Sir Charles Villiers Stanford.

BBC Music Magazine, Christmas 2012
A superb showcase for Michael Collins's talents...I doubt if I've ever hear a finer version of Finzi's 1949 Concerto. The rapt, elegiac intensity of the performance of this works' slow movement, which displays Collins's tone at its most silken, even spectral, is worth the price of the disc itself.

Gramophone Magazine, January 2013
The orchestral playing of the BBC SO is crisp and the clarity of the recording allows one to hear a lot more of the harmonic colour and variety that is lost in some of the others. There is so much energy in the last movement, where Collins shows off not only his splendid agility but also the affecting pathos of the closing pages of the score.

American Record Guide, March / April 2013
Collins and the BBC Symphony give energetic and committed performances, making the case that these concertos are first-rate orchestral works that deserve regular programming. As usual, Collins plays with great personality and amazing technique, and while he brings his trademark British timbre to the table, his work here is cleaner and fastidious listeners will appreciate his steady intonation and sturdier sonic control. Meanwhile, the BBC Symphony is excellent from beginning to end, rendering each selection with the authority and professionalism expected from all acclaimed ensembles.
