Notes & Reviews:

American Record Guide, January/February 2013
David Noon's Motets and Monodies was written in 1972, but looks back to the wildly exploratory and hideously atonal music of Anton Webern. I have a love-hate relationship with this music. I love it because of the demands it places on the listener. Nothing worth gaining comes without a challenge. But I also hate it because its inaccessibility drove away classical music audiences in the last part of the 1900s. The extreme technical challenges and impressively complicated mathematical structure are a marvel - as is the artistry required of the performer.
