American Record Guide, September/October 2013
Bordes was a composer, a choirmaster, and a musicologist, of importance in the revival of Renaissance polyphonic choral music. He was a student of composer Cesar Franck. In 1890 he became the choirmaster at St Gervais Church in Paris, which he quickly turned into a center for the study and performance of 15th, 16th, and 17th Century polyphonic choral music. In 1894 Bordes, organist Alexandre Guilmant, and composer Vincent d'Indy founded the Schola Cantorum, a society that in 1896 became a school for church music composers and musicians with emphasis on the revival of plain chant and the music of Josquin Des Pres, Victoria, and Palestrina. Bordes toured Basque country to collect traditional melodies, and he published 100 of them in Archives de la Tradition Basque (1890). The music is quite sophisticated. While baritone Bou sings quite well and pianist Duchable accompanies and plays his solos with clarity and elan, soprano Marin-Degor is a real trial for the ears.
