Notes & Reviews:

BBC Music Magazine, April 2013
This is a very impressive programme...performances distinguished by expressive warmth, an intense sense of conviction and very fine playing from the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra...[Isle of the Dead] is utterly convincing and inherently dramatic. The brooding atmosphere is very powerfully conveyed.

Gramophone Magazine, March 2013
Litton has a good grasp of [The Rock's] romantic sweep and sustains its narrative and emotional thread.

American Record Guide, July/August 2013
There's a whole lot to enjoy here: BIS's fantastically solid, warm, inviting, spacious SACD sound the incisive playing and luxurious tone of the Bergen Philharmonic and maestro Litton's cogent, superbly paced interpretations that perfectly capture Rachmaninoff's lush, autumnal, sometimes morose sound world. The Isle of the Dead has also been recorded a lot, so Litton has some formidable competition: Previn and Ashkenazy again, plus the classic, icy stillness of Reiner (RCA) and the all-around pleasing St Louis Symphony/Slatkin (Vox). It's still a superb performance, aided by the deep, unforced SACD sound. The Rock is a fine recordings.
