Expedition Audio Recommended
The program is made up of remnants, unfinished works, youthful endeavors and other pieces that have been orphaned from the larger works originally intended to contain them. As such, it's rather a diverse collection of music - marches, motets, pieces that are exuberant and others that are tranquil - but Mendelssohn all, and without doubt, well worth your attention... ... read more ...

Music critic Charles Rosen has called Mendelssohn "the greatest child prodigy the history of Western music has ever known," which is indeed evinced by the fact that he wrote for the organ from the age of 11. Mendelssohn's less well-known works are receiving new appraisal and attention. This disc of organ gems is sure to excite.

They are well represented in recordings. The present program offers organ and choral works that qualify as Mendelssohn rarities. Among the choral rarities here are the Sechs Sprüche, Opus 79. They are brief motets for double choir written for the Berlin Cathedral Choir in keeping with the liturgical revisions authorized by the Prussian court. Aus Tiefer Noth is one of several chorale cantatas for choir and organ dating from the time of Mendelssohn's tour of Italy in 1830. The final work on this program is the serene Verleih' uns Frieden (Grant us peace) of 1831. It is performed here with the accompaniment reduced to strings and organ. The choral works are sung by the Christ Church Schola Cantorum, a choir of volunteers founded in 1997 by Stephen Kennedy to perform Compline at the church on Sunday evenings. Choral tone and discipline are exemplary.
