Notes & Reviews:

Tchaikovsky wrote music for the piano throughout his life. The flamboyant and witty Scherzo a la russe is dedicated to the virtuoso pianist Nikolay Rubinstein, but more often his piano pieces evoke a sense of nostalgia and longing, with even the dances of the Trois morceaux rich in minor key sensitivities. The remarkably varied and resourceful Six Pieces Op. 21were dedicated to his former teacher Anton Rubinstein. Laureate of numerous awards, Andrey Yaroshinsky was also 1st prize winner at the 2011 Gabala International Competition.

American Record Guide, November/December 2013
Yaroshinsky is a young competition winner making his "Artist Laureate" debut recording on Naxos. With a mid-price cost and superb sound, Naxos again treats us to some exceptional performances from a relative newcomer. In terms of programming, it was good to include some late works alongside a piece with a similar title from Tchaikovsky's first opus. His playing is smoother and more connected than Somero's, especially in the brilliant passages. For a single enjoyable disc, this one is hard to beat.
