Notes & Reviews:

This CD features the first recording of the symphonic legacy of Norbert Burgmüller, a romantic composer whose music certainly deserves its share of representation in today's concert repertoire.

This 1998 release is being re-issued by MDG due to popular demand!

During Norbert's short life, he studied composition under Louis Spohr and Moritz Hauptmann and launched his career in Paris. He suffered from severe epilepsy and died at the age of twenty-six before he was able to establish himself in the music world.

The great American pianist Leonard Hokanson as the soloist and Gernot Schmalfuß as the conductor of the Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra, an ensemble looking back on a long and distinguished tradition: a match made in heaven when it comes to the recording of this forgotten romantic music!

"...In many ways [the Piano Concerto in F# Minor] fulfills the ideal of the Romantic piano concerto even better than similar works by longer-lived and more famous contemporaries...This is music of considerable merit and originality, with much historic interest besides." -McColley, Fanfare

International Record Review
Clearly, the history of German music in the first half of the Romantic era might have looked very different if he [Burgmuller] had lived.
