Mieczyslaw Weinberg (1919-'96): Chamber Symphonies Nos. 3 & 4 / Helsingborg SO; Svedlund

Notes & Reviews:

The Guardian, 15th January 2015
The Fourth Chamber Symphony...is totally original, a work studded with self-quotations - from Weinberg's opera The Portrait; from a song cycle; and from the incidental music to a play. There's a sense of rather acerbic defiance about it all, a final assertion of creative independence, which the Helsingborg Symphony captures very well.

BBC Music Magazine, March 2015
Bittersweet, nostalgic, often restrained in expression, this is a musically compelling work...Collectors of Chandos's already excellent Weinberg series should seriously consider investing in this disc, particularly for the memorable Third Chamber Symphony.

The ongoing SACD series of orchestral works by Weinberg now explores some lesser-known, late works of the composer. This disc features the last two Chamber Symphonies, which indeed reflect a largely hidden, yet still prolific period of his life. The Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, recording with Chandos for the first time, is conducted by the highly experienced and versatile Thord Svedlund.
