Notes & Reviews:

Dmitry Kabalevsky's three act opera Colas Breugnon was written between 1936 and 1938 is based on the story of a sculptor who is recalling his experiences at the end of his life. While the opera is rarely performed in its entirety, the overture has found its way into the repertoire staples. The Violin Concerto in A minor, Op. 82 by Alexander Glazunov was premiered in 1905. It has become one of the most popular violin works, and is indicative of the composer's brilliant style. The cadenza at the end is one of the most difficult in the repertoire, because of its utilization of double stopping techniques. Aram Khachaturian's Violin Concerto in D minor was finished in 1940 and dedicated to David Oistrakh, who also premiered the work. The work was awarded the Stalin Prize for arts in 1941. Russian-American classical violinist Philippe Quint began his musical career studying at Moscow's Special Music School for the Gifted. Then he earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Julliard in 1998. He performs on the 1708 "Ruby" Antonio Stradivari violin, which he is borrowing from the Stradivari Society.
