Shostakovich: Symphony no 4 / Caetani, et al

Album Summary

>Shostakovich, Dmitri : Symphony no 4 in C minor, Op. 43
Conductor Ensemble Composer

Notes & Reviews:

The Symphony No. 4 would eventually be performed in the early 1960's (in this country Eugene Ormandy made a splash with the work) and the piece is now firmly recognized as one of Shostakovich's most striking and original works. But there was more material than is contained in the work's three movements. The fragment of a symphonic movement, marked Adagio-Allegro non troppo, can definitely be linked to the main work. This fragment was first performed in February 1998 with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Shostakovich's close friend and colleague, Mstislav Rostropovich.
