Notes and Editorial Reviews
Thanks to Ferenc Fricsay and the expert Berlin instrumentalists the performance moves exceptionally vigorously, occasionally to a fault. The Banquet Scene shows Fischer-Dieskau in spectacular form, fairly blazing in his defiance. The two Donnas certainly give the emotional content of their roles its due, exhibiting impressive dramatic involvement throughout. DG’s remastering has been splendidly managed – the performance sounds as it recorded yesterday.
